Sébastien de Ganay begreift das Material und die Erscheinungsformen von Kartons als ein Experimentierfeld mit großem Transformationspotenzial, das er seit 2002 erforscht. Ausgehend von einem alltäglichen Papierkarton schafft de Ganay einen umfangreichen Korpus an Arbeiten, die das vielseitige Potenzial an Faltungen erkunden. Von der Fläche ausgehend lässt der Karton sich in die dritte Dimension und von der Unbestimmtheit ins Angewandte transformieren. In Anlehnung an Readymades und die Arte Povera geht de Ganay von einem einfachen Gebrauchsmaterial aus und verbindet dieses mit einer in der Tradition der Minimal Art stehenden Auseinandersetzung mit der Oberfläche. Der schnelllebige Karton wird in hochwertiges Aluminium mit granulierter Lackierung übersetzt, so dass ein mimetischer Effekt entsteht, der die Funktion des Kartons impliziert und gleichzeitig aufhebt.

Der Titel Carton Chair Flat (2012) verweist auf die potenzielle Nutzbarkeit der Arbeit. Durch alternative Arten der Faltung ließe sich aus dem hier flachen Karton eine Sitzgelegenheit schaffen, die jedoch durch die Unbeweglichkeit des Materials nur als Idee angedeutet wird. Mit der Werkserie der Cartons betritt de Ganay das Feld des angewandten Objekts und bricht die Grenzen zwischen Kunst und Design auf, indem er gefaltete Aluminium-Kartons entwickelt auf denen Betrachter in manchen Fällen auch sitzend interagieren können. Aus den Kartonskulpturen entwickelte Möbel wurden 2013 im Centre Pompidou in Paris und bei den St. Moritz Art Masters ausgestellt.

Starting from an everyday cardboard box de Ganay creates a comprehensive corpus of works that explore the versatile potential of folding. On the basis of the flat cardboard, it can be transformed into the third dimension and from indeterminacy into the applied. In the style of Readymades and Arte Povera, de Ganay starts out from a simple utility material and combines this with an examination of the surface in the tradition of Minimal Art. The fast-moving cardboard is translated into high-quality aluminum with a granulated lacquer finish, creating a mimetic effect that both implies and suspends the function of the cardboard.

The title Carton Chair Flat (2012) refers to the potential usability of the work. By means of alternative ways of folding, the flat cardboard here could be turned into a seat, but the immobility of the material only hints at this as an idea. With the series of Cartons de Ganay enters the field of applied objects and breaks down the boundaries between art and design by developing folded aluminum cartons on which viewers can in some cases sit and interact. Furniture developed from the cardboard sculptures were exhibited at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and at the St. Moritz Art Masters in 2013.
