    "The circumstances, the circumference […]" (2021) ist ein Wandobjekt aus Leder, das deutliche Spuren des Bearbeitungsprozesses mit Schellack und Farbstiften trägt. Im Titel der Arbeit spricht Johnson von den "Umständen, dem Umfang, Zeichen und Maß" und verweist auf verschiedene Tiere, wie Katzen, Mäuse, Fische und einen Zaunkönig. Text ist eines der zahlreichen Materialien, die der Künstler sich aneignet und in neuen Kombinationen zusammensetzt, um Fragen hinsichtlich Autonomie und Macht aufzuwerfen. Das Leder steht hier als Überbleibsel industrieller Verarbeitungsketten, die den Umgang mit anderen Lebewesen aufzeigen und sich auf gesellschaftliche Diskriminierungsmuster und deren komplexe Strukturen übertragen lassen. Johnsons Überlegungen gehen stets von den Möglichkeiten und der Qualität von Sprache aus, und finden ihren Einfluss in Form der Titel, welche die Werke wie Gedichte begleiten. Sie sind essentieller Bestandteil des Werks und durch subjektive Eindrücke des Künstlers gezeichnet, entziehen sie sich durch bewusste Ambivalenzen einer eindeutigen Lesbarkeit.

    "The circumstances, the circumference [...]" (2021) is a leather wall object that bears clear traces of the machine process, with shellac and colored pencils. In the title of the work, Johnson speaks of the "circumstances, the scope, signs and measure" and refers to various animals, such as cats, mice, fish and a wren. Text is one of the numerous materials that the artist appropriates and assembles into new combinations, raising questions of autonomy and power. Here, leather stands as a remnant of industrial processing chains, showing the treatment of other living beings and transferring these to social patterns of discrimination and their complex structures. Johnson's reflections are based on the possibilities and quality of language. They find their influence in the form of the titles that accompany the works like poems. They are an essential part of the work and are marked by subjective impressions of the artist; they elude clear legibility through conscious ambivalences.
