“She was hungry and awake at strange hours” (2026) is part of the “AEROPLASTICS” series, in which Ju Young Kim explores transitional states and liminal spaces by transforming industrial transport modules from airplanes into symbolically encoded sculptures. She combines these discarded high-tech objects with stained glass, cast metal, ceramics, and plastic, bringing industrial production into dialogue with artisanal techniques.
Kim draws on recurring structures and patterns from different cultural and temporal contexts. Textile ornaments, graphic grids, and landscape motifs meet the standardized surfaces and technical forms of aircraft components. Removed from their original contexts, these elements overlap across different time horizons and forms of memory and recognition.
From the perspective of a transcontinental traveler, Kim reflects on the relativity of space and time as well as the bodily and emotional experience of constant movement. The airplane appears not only as a means of transportation, but as a temporary interior in which stillness and motion, proximity and distance, familiarity and anonymity overlap. The works address the instability that comes with living between different places and engage with questions of identity, belonging, and home.
In „She was hungry and awake at strange hours“ (2026), an aircraft tray table is combined with glass mosaic, stone, aluminum, and bronze. The mosaic takes up the checked pattern of a tablecloth and transfers a familiar domestic surface into the functional interior of the aircraft. At the same time, as suggested by the title, everyday habits and temporal rhythms shift in transit. Meals and sleep detach from their usual hours, while familiar forms can briefly create a sense of comfort that remains strangely unstable within the artificial and temporary space of the aircraft.
