SEALAND | lou jaworski | stART foundation warsaw

30 September - 29 October 2021
overview
SEALAND is the inaugural exhibition of the new artist-in-residence program of stART Foundation in Warsaw, which was founded by the initiators of a&o Kunsthalle Leipzig, Germany. Lou Jaworski is the first artist-in-residence to be exhibited together with Piotr Bosacki in the former rooms of the Polish radio station UNITRA Marcin Kasprzak.

The studio also serves as the exhibition space of the newly established artist residence and is located in the former conference room of the radio station building from the 1950s in downtown Warsaw. In its new function, the octagonal space, which floats above the ground on eight columns and can only be reached as an annex via a corridor from the main building, becomes an ideal place to encounter art and cultural activities.

As the first fellow, Lou Jaworski is largely responsible for the redesign and artistic direction of the space. In less than three months, the space and entryway were completely transformed into a venue for experiencing art and culture.

The architecture of the exhibition space is reminiscent of sea forts, such as Red Sands Fort, which were constructed near the east and west coasts of England during the Second World War. In 1967, the independent and legendary micronation Principality of Sealand was founded on one of those abandoned artificial platforms, after the original plans to operate a pirate radio station outside the reach of British authorities failed.

The exhibition SEALAND presents new works by Lou Jaworski made of ferrite magnets and marble, characterized by the tense interaction of material autonomy, ephemeral abstraction and physical laws, while the object-like wall works by Piotr Bosacki shift between minimalist sculpture and abstract painting.

Lou Jaworski and Piotr Bosacki met for the first time in 2017 during their visit of the exhibition "Theatre of Measurement", curated by Matthew Post and Chris Fitzpatrick at Kunstverein München. This is a significantly detail, as the "Theatre of Measurement" is of great importance to the work of both artists. It stretches between a physical, partly scientific phenomenon as well as the illustrative and aesthetic.
