Rosemarie Castoros konzeptuelle Inventory Zeichnungen (1968-69) basieren auf alltäglichen Wahrnehmungen der Künstlerin, die sie in einem eigenen Zahlensystem strukturiert. In Controlled Arbitrary Statements (1968) wird die visuelle Realität, beziehungsweise Bestandsaufnahmen (engl. Inventories) der Umgebung der Künstlerin in ein Zahlensystem von 1-5 eingeordnet. Raum, Distanz, Umgebung und ihre Beziehungen zueinander werden durch Messungen scheinbar rational abgesteckt. Durch den Widerspruch im Titel (auf deutsch „kontrollierte, willkürliche Aussagen“) wird die vermeintliche Systematisierung und Rationalität mit einem subtilen Humor entlarvt. In den Inventory Zeichnungen erforscht Castoro das Zusammenspiel zwischen Logik und Irrationalität und die Distanz zwischen subjektiv wahrgenommener und tatsächlicher Realität.
Zentral bleibt dabei, wie bereits in ihren Pencil Paintings und Interference Drawings, die formale Optik der Linie, welche auch im Zentrum der Zeichnung Oct 25 1968 / Jan 24 1969 (1968-69) steht. Diese verweist auf Castoros beinahe obsessive Aufmerksamkeit für Zeit in einem Bezugsystem von diagonalen Linien und Daten, welche - wie auch bereits bei Controlled Arbitrary Statements - durch die Betrachter/in ohne Kenntnis des verwendeten Systems nicht zu deuten sind.
Im Gegensatz zu den Pencil Paintings, in welchen neben der Linie die Materialität und Raumwirkung von zentraler Rolle ist, weisen die Zeichnungen auf Castoros zunehmende Hinwendung zur Konzeptkunst ab 1968 und haben einen aufzeichnenden Charakter.
Rosemarie Castoro's conceptual inventory drawings (1968-69) are based on the artist's everyday perceptions, which she structures utlizing herown personal numeric system. In Controlled Arbitrary Statements (1968), the visual reality, or inventories, of the artist's surroundings are arranged in a number system of 1-5. Space, distance, surroundings and their relationships to one another are seemingly rationally defined by measurements. The contradiction in the title exposes the supposed systematization and rationality with subtle humor. In the inventory drawings, Castoro explores the interplay between logic and irrationality and the distance between subjectively perceived and actual reality.
As in her Pencil Paintings and Interference Drawings, the formal appearance of the line remains central, which is also the focus of the drawing Oct 25 1968 / Jan 24 1969 (1968-69). This refers to Castoro's almost obsessive attention to time in a reference system of diagonal lines and dates, which - as in Controlled Arbitrary Statements - cannot be interpreted by the viewer without knowledge of the system.
In contrast to Pencil Paintings, in which materiality and spatial effect play a central role alongside the line, the drawings point to Castoro's increasing turn towards Conceptual Art from 1968 onwards and have a recording character.
