In “Paar,” Lukas Heerich covers dismantled speakers with spray plaster, so that they appear less as technical devices and more as architectural forms. The spray plaster, used specifically for fire protection, evokes notions of protection, insulation, and building surfaces. What remains is an enclosure that was originally designed for sound transmission but now serves no acoustic function. The interior remains legible as a resonance chamber, even if it remains silent. The combination of speaker and fire protection simultaneously evokes the function of acoustic warning systems: sound as a signal, as an indication of danger, whose potential is inherent in the object here but remains unfulfilled. It is precisely through this withdrawal that Heerich directs our attention to the cavity, volume, surface, and spatial structure that make sound possible in the first place. The speakers become deactivated bodies in which function, protection, materiality, and architectural space overlap.
