In Untitled (Gesture Project) (1989), Gary Kuehn focuses on the conditions of drawing and the relationship between gesture, surface, and the radius of physical action. He segments the canvas into two limited spaces that control and simultaneously challenge the act of drawing. Within these reduced zones, intuitive movements unfold, emerging as condensed, energetic lines. The closer the gesture gets to the edges of the canvases, the more visible the impulse to transcend the given framework becomes. Kuehn thus refers to a basic principle of his work: freedom arises only in resistance to limitation. The work shows two forces that are inextricably intertwined—the urge for open, physical expression and the precisely set restriction that shapes and makes this energy visible.
