The jury of BIG ART, the art initiative of the Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft, has awarded prizes to two projects: Nicolás Lamas and Hofstetter Kurt won the competition for the new Graz Center of Physics with works that are thematically closely linked to the research focus of the faculty. The Center of Physics is one of the largest university construction projects in Austria and is currently being built on the campus of the University of Graz in cooperation with Graz University of Technology. Completion is planned for 2030.
Nicolás Lamas' sculpture Knotledge is based on the idea of interweaving two systems of information storage: today's computer keyboard and the Khipu - a knotted script used by the Incas to transmit numerical and structural information. The large-format wall sculpture is modeled on a keyboard circuit.
This connection between a centuries-old, not yet fully deciphered form of communication from another culture and a modern, universal interface - the keyboard - opens up a wide range of associative spaces. It invites reflection on technologies, knowledge systems and cultural influences.
