the exhibition featuring nicolás lamas explores concepts of a near or distant future

The exhibition Zeitraumschweben at Museum Haus Opherdicke opens with works by Nicolás Lamas.

Ideas of a near or distant future have always fascinated humanity and have found expression in a wide variety of artistic images. In the 1920s, the achievements of modernity created an atmosphere of enthusiastic optimism and new beginnings. At the same time, the role of human beings in the industrialized world appeared ambivalent, as reflected in depictions of the body as a machine-like construct.

With the beginning of the atomic age, a more critical view of the future came to the forefront. From the 1970s onward, utopian and dystopian scenarios replaced the belief in constant progress, turning the future into a mirror of social questions.

Art of the 21st century also revisits these issues. In light of new bodily identities, genetic developments, cloning technology, and artificial intelligence, the role of the individual in society is being renegotiated. Curiosity and the desire for knowledge shape all these visions of the future—as a space for visions, ambitions, and dreams, for reaching for the stars both metaphorically and literally.

Through paintings, works on paper, sculptures, and video installations, the exhibition invites visitors to explore the relationship between humanity and the future across interwoven thematic fields.
