Throughout his career Larry Bell has made investigations into the properties of light on surface. By experimenting with the nature of different surface structures and their relationship to space, Bell has developed a methodology characterized by spontaneity, intuition and improvisation.
The color lithographs of his Barcelona Series (1989) are characterized by condensation and transparency. In his experiments with printmaking techniques, Bell discovered that lithography provided him with the opportunity to apply many thin layers of color on top of each other. Bell is particularly drawn to this technique for its potential to create prints with tonal variations and different opacities of color.
