artissima 2025
For Artissima 2025, max goelitz presents the work of Korean artist Ju Young Kim (*1991, Seoul, KR) in the fair’s Present Future section. The booth installation transforms the exhibition space into a mixture of waiting room and transit zone, composed of semi-transparent plastic panels and a waiting bench. On the walls, new glass works from the series Air Conditioned Hours are displayed alongside the piece A green door at the butterfly house from Kim’s ongoing AEROPLASTICS series, creating the feeling of an atmospheric interior of an airplane cabin.
The presentation is accompanied by a mixed reading performance by writer and curator Guilherme Vilhena Martins, in which texts are read out loud through a speaker system in the manner of in-flight announcements. The performance will take place during the fair at intervals over a speaker system, creating a transient auditory landscape within the booth installation. In doing so, it expands the sculptural language of Kim’s objects into an ephemeral, time-based encounter. The performance draws on Kim’s artist book Air Conditioned Hours, sharing its title with her series, which combines photographic works with collaboratively written texts by the artist and Vilhena Martins reflecting on global transit experiences. Vice Versa, the new glass works in the series, take inspiration from the images depicted in the book.
Air Conditioned Hours presents photographs capturing Kim’s perspective as a transcontinental traveler. The texts, rooted in diary entries, conversations and observations, explore themes of temporality, transience and displacement. The publication’s airplane-utensils inspired design, engraved with Art Nouveau motifs, underscores the interplay between movement and grounding, ephemerality and permanence as well as the compactness of travel.
