Originally designed to offer a rest to UNTITLED Art Fair Miami Beach 2015, the main objective of Sébastien de Ganay (*1962 in Boulogne-Billancourt, FR) was to develop a lounge chair that could be produced anywhere: cutting four pieces out of simple plywood on a local CNC machine – in order to keep its carbon trace as low as possible – and assemble it within minutes without screws or glue, the “4 Piece Chair“ was born. For the exhibition “THE OTHER IS ONESELF“ in Vienna in 2019, he produced a series of chairs upon which the names of destroyed Syrian cities have been printed in the colors of the national flag. De Ganay creates a modular setting for communication in which such questions can be addressed such as how cultural heritage and memories can be preserved and handed on to future generations. “THE OTHER IS ONESELF“ is an initiative of Sébastien de Ganay mobilizing the artistic community and civil society with the objective of raising public awareness in various areas: sustainable development for social progress and the strengthening of human rights and democratic values through artistic creation.
The series consists of the motifs of the following city names in Latin and Arabic script, each in 4 colors: red, green, black and white and in combinations of the seat felts in these 4 colors: 72 possible unique pieces.
